Advising Resources

We develop and maintain a strong advising network for our students. We reach out to students to support them before their first day of class and continue to support them once they're here as we help them identify, pursue, and achieve their educational goals. In some cases, we continue to support students after graduation, as advisors respond to requests for letters of recommendation to help launch budding careers and/or graduate work.

If the heart of the advising program at Humboldt is the relationship between a student and their official advisor, it is our duty as advisors to work diligently on our professional development in order to help students explore, clarify and succeed in achieving their academic goals. We have a network of campus resources that supplement our relationship with our students and the development of our advisors, faculty and staff.

Holistic Conversations

Many students encounter similar challenges, but they think they are alone in their experience. In addition to regular topics of advising conversations, ask students about their current reality to help normalize challenges: 

  • How are you holding up? What is daily life like for you? Are you working more/less than usual? Are you attending your classes? What is working well for you? Where can you use some support?
  • If your advisee is on academic notice, have a strategic conversation about where to devote their energy and how to get connected with tutoring or other resources such as SDRC, CAPS or CARE services.
  • 10 Ways to Tackle Linguistic Bias in Our Classrooms: It's time for us as faculty members to recognize and combat our prejudices when it comes to how our students speak and write.
  • Supporting Transgender Students in the Classroom: Create an atmosphere that supports trans-identified and gender-nonconforming students.
