This guide contains information about new policies affecting how to register, new classes, important dates and deadlines for advising, registration, and much more. Fall semester class registration begins in April. Spring semester class registration begins in November.

Important Dates and Deadlines to Remember:

• March 29 - Fall 2019 Schedule of Classes available online:

• April 1 - Cesar Chavez Holiday — Campus Closed

• April 2 – Mandatory Advising Begins – Your registration will be BLOCKED until you meet with

your advisor. All continuing students must meet with their academic advisor (listed in their Student

Center under Advisor) before they register, to talk about their academic progress and educational

goals, and to discuss course schedule plans for at least the next three semesters.

• April 15-26 - Summer and Fall 2019 Early Registration.

• May 13-17 - Spring 2019 Final Exams Week.

• Registration limited to 17 units until Monday, July 1st at 12:01 am, when it will increase to 19 units.

• July 1 - “Reserved Capacity” seats in GE courses will be released.

Application for Graduation

Your application initiates the degree evaluation process, participation in commencement, diploma ordering, and your name listed in the commencement booklet.

When to apply - Bachelor’s degree

Apply for graduation three semesters before you expect to complete all your degree requirements. For most students, this will be early in your junior year. Applying early in your junior year will ensure that you receive your degree check in time to plan your final semesters at Humboldt.

Avoid a HOLD!

If you do not apply to graduate after earning 90+ units, a hold will be placed on future registration until an Application for Graduation is received.

Use the Chart Below to Find Which GE Math Class is Right for You

First, find your major
Then read across to find your category
Register for the math class listed under your major and category

• Regardless of GE Math status, you may take a supported Math course but need to ask for instructor

approval to add the course. For example, a student may take Math 103 but would prefer to

take Math 103i and Math 3.

• If you did not pass your GE Math and corresponding supported Math courses on your first attempt,

you can repeat both classes for grade forgiveness.

• If you are taking a supported Math course in addition to a GE Math course remember to register for

both classes at the same time (eg. Math 101i AND Math 1, Math 103i AND Math 3,

Stat 108i AND Stat 8).

• If you are ready for GE Math with Support (Category 3), you can choose to take a GE Math course

with additional support or a non-supported GE course. Continuing students may also wish to

consult their academic advisors. Students should take courses based on their major.

Students in Math 101 and Stat 108 are strongly encouraged to enroll in a corresponding

SI course (Math 198).

Update Your DARS Degree Planner Every Semester:

You will soon be meeting with your advisor to talk about your academic plan and have your registration hold lifted. Before meeting with your advisor, review and update your DARS Degree Planner.

All undergraduate students are required to plan at least 3 semesters ahead (Fall 2019, Spring 2020, and Fall 2020). Graduating seniors should plan through their final semester.

There have been many updates to the course catalog in the last year: new courses, suspended/inactive courses, changes to prerequisites and course numbers, units, and course availability. Be sure to address any new red flags in your plan.

Why do some planned courses say “SUSPENDED” or “INACTIVE” in the course title?

These courses may no longer be offered at Humboldt. Any inactive courses will be displayed at the top of your audit (left column) in the DARS Degree Planner with a warning. Check your DARS to find courses you can take instead and update your plan. Discuss any changes with your advisor.

Special Listings in the online Class Schedule is a quick and easy way to

find the following types of classes:

• GE Class Seat Availability: A quick way to find out which classes are offered, by GE area.

• Double Counting Classes: Classes that meet more than one degree requirement.

• Online Classes: Sections of classes offered online.

• Hybrid Classes: Classes that provide both an online and classroom experience.

• Weekend/Evening Classes: Classes offered after 5pm or on the weekends.

• Partial Term Classes: Classes that begin or end during the term. These must be added by the

add/drop period regardless of when the class begins.

• Sustainability Classes: Classes are focused on, or related to, dimensions of sustainability.

• Community Service Learning: Classes that foster a deeper connection and relationship to

our community through public service and mentorship.

• Academic Internships: Classes that integrate students’ academics with practical experience

If “Perm Text Status” is “None,” then there are no required textbooks and if the sta-tus is “Free,” then the textbook is provided free to students. Click on the “Texts” link to see what texts and/or supplies are required for the class.*

*Note: The availability and cost presented here is from the Humboldt Bookstore (who also has a price match program— https://www.bkstr.com/humboldtstatestore/home/en or through Canvas). Students may purchase or rent textbooks and supplies from others and it is important to make sure that the items are exactly the same (ISBN and edition).

Advisor/ Advisee Relationship:

Student Responsibilities:

Attend all advising appointments and maintain contact with your advisor each semester. If you are unable to attend a meeting, notify your advisor 24 hours in advance.
Clarify personal values and your academic and career goals with your advisor.
Come prepared to each appointment with questions and/or material for discussion.
Create and/or update your three-semester DARS degree plan each semester.
Gather all relevant decision-making information.
Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.
Complete all “to dos” or recommendations from your advisor.
Accept responsibility for your decisions.
Become knowledgeable about college policies, procedures, and deadlines like CR/NC, add/drop, etc.
Check your email, and myHumboldt portal on a frequent basis for updates and notifications about topics important to you.
Check your to-do list and registration date and time on your student center prior to registering.
Register on time for the greatest selection of classes.
Make timely progress towards your degree.
Utilize relevant support services.
Become knowledgeable about your major requirements, faculty and departmental resources, and opportunities to get involved.
Understand the value of education and life-long learning.

• Assist you in choosing a major consistent with your abilities and interests.

educational plans.

• Teach you about major, general education and all university requirements for

your degree program, utilizing DARS and DARS Degree Planner, Humboldt catalog,

major academic plans (MAPs), and other tools.

• Match your needs with available resources and explain strategies for using them.

• Assist in identifying university resources for finding opportunities for work,

community service, and volunteer experiences.

• Collaborate with campus support services, faculty, and staff to facilitate your

success.

• Provide accurate and timely information on Humboldt academic policies and

procedures for students.
