The City of Arcata's unique wastewater treatment facility, marsh, and wildlife habitat has many ancillary benefits. The facility attracts approximately 150,000 visitors per year (The Ashford Borough Council, 2008).
There are many reasons to visit the Arcata Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Some people come to learn about the innovative wastewater treatment that enhances the community. Other people come to see the more than 270 species of birds that make use of the habitat provided by the Marsh (The Ashford Borough Council, 2008). Even more people come to exercise on the trails while enjoying the natural experience.
