Using wastewater to grow fish was one of the compelling reasons for the development of the Arcata Wastewater Treatment Plant and Wildlife Sanctuary. Research was performed throughout the 1980's and 1990's to determine the feasibility of wastewater fisheries.

Figure1: Although the Oxidation Ponds are not fit for human swimming, the effluent from the treatment wetlands is suitable to raise fish.
