Background Information on HSU’s Preview Plus Program

Humboldt State University’s Preview Plus Program is an initiative started in 1989 to help traditionally underrepresented students explore life at Humboldt State University.

The program is administered by HSU’s Student Academic Services Outreach Program, which is part of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

Students involved in Preview Plus have been admitted to Humboldt State for the fall 2014 semester but have not necessarily committed to attending the university. Preview Plus is an opportunity for them to tour campus, meet with students and faculty and decide whether the Arcata, Calif., campus is the right fit for them.

Students are recruited from the Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fresno areas. Those involved are typically from low-income backgrounds or are the first generation in their family to attend college.

The two-day program includes all the activities part of the Spring Preview Day, which is typically held on a Friday in late March or early April. On Saturday, students attend an expanded program where they learn about the next steps to complete their enrollment; this includes completing financial aid and housing applications and applying to the university’s Educational Opportunity Program.

Students are invited to attend the Preview Plus program and those student are identified by information provided on their college and financial aid applications.

The program provides transportation and is free of charge for the students. Students in the Los Angeles area meet at the Los Angeles Union Station where they are greeted byHSU chaperones. The chaperones are typically HSU alumni or staff members from HSU’s Office of Admissions. Approximately 100 students attend Preview Plus from the Los Angeles area, roughly 50 attend from the San Francisco / Fresno areas.

Staff from Humboldt State University contract with Silverado Stages to provide transportation.

Approximately 45 to 52 percent of the students involved in the program commit to attending HSU.
