California State Society of CPAs
Humboldt, Del Norte Chapter
Scholarship Application Instructions

Our local chapter wishes to support HSU Accounting majors who want to become CPAs and stay in the local area in starting your careers.  Thus, we are offering scholarships to assist you in preparing for the CPA exam after you have graduated and obtained a job with a local CPA firm.

Qualifications for this scholarship are:
• Graduation from HSU during 2013 – 2014 academic year (including summer) with a major in Business Administration (Option:  Accounting).
• Successful employment with a local CPA firm.
• You have registered to take the CPA exam.
• Submit a scholarship application letter to Dr. Mike Thomas, School of Business, Siemens Hall 129b, HSU.  Submit the application letter as a Word file attached to an email to Dr. Thomas at  The application letter should address:
Paragraph 1: Your career goals (why you should receive this scholarship), and why you want to stay in the local area after graduation.
Paragraph 2: Current overall GPA, HSU GPA, Business GPA, and Accounting GPA.  Your expected graduation date.
Paragraph 3: Brief description of your extra-curricular activities (relevant work experience, current job(s), membership in student/professional/community organizations (positions held (titles, e.g., Vice President of Membership), work you do for them, length of service (dates) for each activity).
Paragraph 4: Financial “hardships,” personal constraints, and any other factors you wish us to consider.
Paragraph 5: Your contact information (local phone and mailing address, email address, HSU student ID number).
The application letter should not exceed two pages.

Scholarship award process:
• Professor Thomas will screen applications and verify your information in the application letter.
• Acceptable application letters (that include all the information required above) will be forwarded to the local chapter’s Steering Committee for final selection of the award recipients.  It is anticipated one or more $500 awards will be made this year.  Awards may be for more than $500.  The Steering Committee will determine the number and amounts of each scholarship, including not awarding any scholarships for a particular year.
• Upon graduation and employment with a local CPA firm, and registration for the CPA exam, scholarship recipients will ask their managing partner to send a formal letter verifying this to the current Treasurer of the local chapter.
• The Treasurer will authorize the disbursements and present the awards to the recipients at the next annual Student Night mixer/dinner meeting (or by other method agreed to by the Steering Committee).
• The Steering Committee will designate at least two alternative applicants for this award in case the scholarship winner(s) does not meet the graduation, employment, and exam registration criteria.
