The Redwood Coast Region* includes California’s four most northern counties- Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino. Poverty rates are high in this rural region of Northern California.
According to the U.S. Census, 2000, 18.3% of the population in the Redwood Coast Region lives below the federal poverty level (FPL**). By comparison, for the whole state of California, 14.2% of the population lives below the FPL (U.S. Census 2000, Summary File 3).
The distribution of poverty in the Redwood Coast Region varies considerably by age. Among the population under age 18 in the Redwood Coast Region 23.6% live below the FPL.
