The Redwood Coast Region* includes California’s four most northern counties- Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino. Poverty rates are high in this rural region of Northern California. According to the U.S. Census, 2000, 18.3% of the population in the Redwood Coast Region lives below the federal poverty level (FPL**). By comparison, for the whole state of California, 14.2% of the population lives below the FPL (U.S. Census 2000, Summary File 3).
The distribution of poverty in the Redwood Coast Region varies considerably by age. Among the population under age 5 in the Redwood Coast Region 27.9% live below the FPL.
