Certificate in Exercise Nutrition


OFFERED ONLINE for students and working professionals who wish to expand their knowledge of the complex relationship between nutrition and exercise.

This Certificate of Study is presented entirely online. Each course is unique in the required assignments, but all have been designed to develop a strong online community of learners through asynchronous classroom discussions between students and the instructor.

Students are given assignments, quizzes and projects with required due dates submitted electronically. Each course may have an online midterm and final examination to be completed during specific identified periods of time.

Certificate Requirements

To earn a Certificate in Exercise Nutrition, students must complete the comprehensive nutrition class (HED 231) and the four 3-unit classes (all listed below). The courses may be taken in any order once the basic nutrition has been completed. Instructor approval is required.

HED 231: Basic Human Nutrition

Theories and practices examining the role of nutrition in health and exercise. Specific nutrients, their digestion, absorption, function, food sources, requirements, and chemical makeup will be presented.

HED 342  Nutrition for Athletic Performance

How food consumption and nutrition affect energy production and physical performance in sports activities. Analyze diet modifications, such as carbohydrate loading and use of ergogenic aids, to improve performance. Prerequisite: HED 231 (or equivalent nutrition course ) is required.

Theories and practices to maintaining safe and healthy weight levels. Diet analysis, body composition and effects of exercise; behavior modification. Prerequisite: HED 231 (or equivalent nutrition course ) is required.

HED 446  Optimal Bone and Muscle Development

Explore the synergistic aspects of exercise and nutrition related to the development of strong bones and the maintenance, repair, and strength development of muscle. Prerequisites: HED 231 (or equivalent nutrition course) is required; Human Physiology (ZOOL 113 or equivalent) is recommended.
