Introduction to Cross Country Skiing

This is a one-day excursion to the snow for first time cross-country skiers and for those who wish to improve their skills. You will receive individual instruction in cross-country skiing including flatland and downhill techniques. Bring a friend or family member and enjoy a day in the snow!

Beer Brewing 101

February 22

This one-day seminar will cover a variety of topics associated with all-grain brewing including some advanced techniques. The instructor will demonstrate the brewing process on a 1 barrel pub-style brew system. Some of the topics to be discussed will include sanitation/closed-system operations, an overview of brewhouse equipment, carbohydrate and protein conversion temperatures, bitterness/flavor/aroma extraction from hops, yeast management, and many others. The students will benefit from a hands-on style presentation where they will experience the brewing process first hand while discussing related topics. Visit the Humboldt Regeneration Brewery and Farm website for more information.

Wine Tasting 101

February 25
Ever wonder what swirling wine in the glass was about? What do the “legs” really mean? This two hour class will show you how to understand and appreciate wine. To be held at Libation on the plaza in Arcata. This is the first class of their four class wine appreciation series and can be used for that series.

Jazz Improvisation

February 24 - April 7

This class is geared toward the beginning or intermediate jazz improviser. Students will work together to gain the necessary skills to be effective soloists, learn fundamental chords and scales and the basics of swing rhythm. Students will also be introduced to the twelve bar blues and other essential jazz song forms. The class will learn classic jazz tunes and gain the ability to perform them in a unique and educated manner.

ACA Instructor Certification Workshop for Whitewater Kayak

February 27 - March 1 & March 7 - 8
Learn to be a fun, safe, and effective whitewater kayak instructor! This course will help aspiring instructors improve their teaching abilities, while adhering to the ACA’s golden standard of excellence. We will explore teaching styles, as well as student learning styles, practice teaching skills and giving presentations both on and off of the water. The course will cover teaching progressions for hard skills and boating concepts. You will also have lots of opportunity to hone your own personal paddling skills and technique. Candidates are tested on teaching ability, technical knowledge, and the ability to perform rescues and maintain safety. Modeling ability, paddling skill, and communication skills will also be assessed. This class is tons of FUN, and a great opportunity for personal paddling and instructional growth. Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the first weekend and Saturday and Sunday for the second. Level 1 and 2 certification conclude by the end of the first weekend. Levels 3 - 4 must attend both weekends. In general, we will meet every morning at 8:30 AM and participants should expect to be on the water until 5:30 PM.

Introduction to Climbing: Outdoor Option

March 7

This course is designed as an introduction to the sport of rock climbing with an emphasis on climbing for enjoyment and health. The course will cover the basic skills needed for technical rock climbing, to include safety considerations, climbing techniques, use of equipment, basic knots, belaying and rappelling.

Program Fee Includes: 
Instruction, all rock climbing equipment and permit fees.
