SRC Instructor Biographies

April Parrott, Personal Trainer
April has been has peen a personal trainer for 3+ years. Her passion is to help those that are new to fitness find love for an active lifestyle. As a Master's student in Kinesiology her love for fitness and the human body is expanding. She knows that exercise effects every aspect of a person's life from reducing stress, weight loss, proper nutrition, and overall health and she wants to share that with you. April enjoys running, kayaking, long distance cycling, and in her free time she is a photographer and musician.

Lucia Ordonez-Gauger, Spin Instructor
Lucia is workout enthusiast who has been featured in instructional fitness videos, has lifeguarded for 3 years, and worked for 2 years as an open ocean Kayak guide in San Diego. She loves biking and began spinning indoors in college, finding her love for high intensity cardio exercise, and in 2013 she became certified as a Spinning Instructor. She is a graduate student in the Natural Resources department, and in her free time enjoys good beer, surfing, diving, cooking, camping, yoga, and travel.

Suzanne Dunning, Yoga Instructor
Suzanne Dunning has been studying, teaching, and practicing yoga for 14 years. She is deeply committed to the life-long study of this ancient tradition and loves sharing her enthusiasm for breath and movement with her students. She empowers students to come to yoga exactly as they are and teaches an eclectic form of Vinyasa yoga drawing on her knowledge of various styles of yoga.

Lauryn Axelrod, Wellness Instructor
Lauryn is a holistic nutrition and health counselor in private practice. Originally trained as a professional dancer, Lauryn is passionate about the importance of good nutrition for athletes and non-athletes alike. Through personalized coaching, workshops and classes, Lauryn helps others discover -and recover- their best natural health.

Sheila Alicea, Spin Instructor
Before beginning her current position teaching in the Kinesiology and Recreation Administration Department, Sheila was a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor, and has taught various classes such as spinning, cardio kickboxing, step aerobics, boot camp, pilates, body sculpting and conditioning, cardio interval, and physioball. Sheila enjoys learning and teaching about the "mental side" of sport and exercise, from what motivates individuals to the mood effects from exercise.

Jessica Blandini-Lake, Zumba Instructor
Jessica has been teaching Zumba Fitness since July 2013. Her passion for teaching Zumba shines through her enthusiastic personality and fun choreography. Jessica believes that fitness is fun, and encourages her students to have fun while burning calories! After completing all of her transfer requirements at College of the Redwoods, Jessica is ready to start school in the Fall 2014 semester as a junior at Humboldt State. She is currently a Kinesiology major with an emphasis in Exercise Science. In her free time, Jessica enjoys cooking Paleo dishes, dancing, painting her nails, and of course, spending time with her friends, family, and pets! Jessica would like to remind you that although Zumba Fitness is considered to be “Latin Dance exercise,” there is no need to have any dance background in order to participate. As long as you are moving, smiling, and having fun, that is all that matters!

Mia Kennel, Yoga Instructor
Mia is a certified yoga instructor and ispassionate about teaching yoga and meditation with a holistic teaching approach for living a full and healthy life through mindful meditation, breathing techniques, and learning to be aware of staying present while practicing yoga asanas. She has been teaching and practicing for over 15 years and has taught a variety of yoga styles that include Vinyasa, Yin yoga, restorative, power yoga,and Kundalini. Her teaching style is based in Vinyasa flow but integrates many other styles depending what is needed for her students. She is a Cultural Anthropology major particularly interested in other cultures and food and has lived in and traveld the world. She's also an emerging documentary photographer, enjoys traveling, hiking, anything outdoors and in nature, along with fostering dogs, gardening and spending time with her husband and their dog Leo.
