Isshinryu Karate

February 2 – March 11
Isshinryu Karate is a classical style of Okinawan Karate and an activity providing a strong workout while teaching a practical form of self-defense. Students also learn the basics, kata and sparring techniques. Beginners are welcome, and continuing students can earn rank in this style of karate. This class is taught by Robert Sherman 8th degree black belt, Eric Lien 6th degree black belt and Nicole Doan 3rd degree black belt are the chief instructors. This class has been taught concurrently at HSU since 1979.
 
Program Fee: 
$40 HSU Students • $45 All Others (Both Options: $70 HSU Students • $80 All Others)

Tae Kwon Do

February 9 – May 7
Traditional Tae Kwon Do is an extremely effective Martial Art for self defense, self-discipline, and self-empowerment. Training will increase your cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility while teaching you effective self-defense techniques in realistic situations. Tae Kwon Do is world renowned for having the most dynamic and explosive kicking techniques of any Martial Art. Coupled with its focus on realistic self defense, and the use of grappling, joint-locking, choking and hand-striking techniques, traditional Tae Kwon Do will provide you with the skills and confidence to handle any situation. Whether you are new to the Martial Arts, or want to train for your black belt, our proven method of instruction will help you succeed. Students will have an opportunity to test for their first belt at the end of the semester and can attend some additional classes at Sun Yi’s Academy of Tae Kwon Do, here in Arcata.
 
Program Fee: 
$75 HSU Students • $90 All Others
Day and Time: 
Mondays & Wednesdays • 5:00 - 6:00pm
Location: 
The first two weeks are at HSU's Recreation & Wellness Center Room 125, the following weeks at Sun Yi’s Academy of Tae Kwon Do, Arcata
Notes: 
An additional $20 will be collected at the first class meeting to cover the cost of the uniform.

Tai Chi

February 10—March 12
This course focuses on the Yang family long form of Tai Chi Chuan. Participants will learn the foundational concepts and principles of Tai Chi and theory. Emphasis will be on body movement, breath work, and slow movement.

$25 HSU Students • $35 All Others (Both Options: $35 HSU Students • $45 All Others)
Drop-In Fee: 
$3 HSU Students • $5 All Others
