Part-time Timeline

Summer Institute

(5 units. 1-week online, 4 weeks at HSU, before 1st Fall)

  • ANTH 670 Introduction to Applied Anthropology (2 units)
  • ANTH 671 Methods in Applied Anthropology (3 units)
  • Milestones: Pass Preliminary Exams
  • Note: The Summer Institute includes one week of online preparatory work followed by 4-weeks of on-campus meetings in the classroom/lab/field in addition to out-of-class study time. During the 4-weeks (5 weekends) on campus, in-class hours are generally be split between four weekday afternoons and a longer weekend field days.
  • The 2015 Summer Institute will begin with preparatory assignments completed during June/July and submitted online between July 4-8, 2015. The on-campus portion of the 2015 Summer Institute will be held from July 11-Aug 8, 2015. Please see Class Schedule for more details.

Semester 1, Fall

(4 units, online)

  • ANTH 673 Anthropology in Practice (3 units)
  • ANTH 678 Pro Seminar (1 unit)
  • Milestones: Establish internship

Semester 2, Spring

(6+ units, online):

  • ANTH 675 Applied Anthropology Field Placement (3 units)
  • Electives (3-4 units)
  • Milestones: Complete internship.

Semester 3, Fall

(6+ units, online)

  • ANTH 672 Theory in Applied Anthropology (3 units)
  • Elective (3-4 units)
  • Milestones: Establish thesis chair and preliminary thesis plan. Make a plan to complete IRB/IACUC (if applicable) before filing for Advancement to Candidacy next semester.

Semester 4, Spring

(4 units, online)

  • ANTH 674 Project design and Management (3 units)
  • ANTH 678 Pro Seminar (1 unit)
  • Milestones: Form thesis committee, approval of thesis topic, file IRB/IACUC, file Advancement to Candidacy. Students will generally begin thesis research during the summer or fall directly following this course (after IRB/IACUC approval).

Semester 5, Fall

(4+ units, online)

  • ANTH 678 Pro Seminar (1 unit)
  • Elective (3-4 units)
  • Milestones: Thesis progress approved by thesis committee.

Semester 6, Spring

(6 units, online)

  • ANTH 690 Thesis (6 units*)
  • Milestones: Thesis completed or progress approved by thesis committee. In-person/Skype oral defense of thesis before final thesis submission (extension to a later semester will be granted if the thesis is not expected to be completed).
  • *Note: If thesis completion is not expected this semester, students are advised to sign up for fewer than 6 thesis units, and distribute the remaining units over (no more than 2) subsequent semesters to maintain continuous enrollment of at least one unit per semester. If students complete all 6 thesis units before the thesis is completed, students shall enroll in one unit (x693) per semester to maintain Graduate Continuous Enrollment.
