Secondary Education Test Information
Basic Skills Requirement:
All candidates for a California Credential must meet the Basic Skills Requirement prior to entering the credential program. Your options are:
- Pass the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills for Teachers). The last test possible test date we can accept for CBEST is the June test date. If you do not have proof of passing CBEST by August 1st prior to entering the credential program, we cannot admit you. For this reason, we strong recommend taking your tests early. To sign up for CBEST, go to the testing company's website:
- Use either EAP or ELM/EPT college placement test passing scores. We higly recommend choosing the CBEST route instead (for more information, click here). If you're interested in using this option, please contact Program Coordinator Diane Ryerson at 707-826-5108 before the application deadline for advice and to find out if you qualify.
Subject Matter Program:
Single subject credential candidates must demonstrate subject matter knowledge by either completing a state approved subject matter program (a bachelor's degree with an education emphasis from an approved university) or passing the CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers) in a specific subject. Candidates who have not passed the exam on or before the May test date will not be admitted. We encourage you to plan early for taking CSET as certain subjects are not offered on every test date.
To sign up for CSET, go to the testing company's website:
All applications to the SED Program at Humboldt State University are assessed by a committee of professors and local secondary teachers in the candidate's specific subject area department. This subject matter departmental review (SMDR) may include an interview, presentation and/or writing sample. HSU also accepts assessment verification from CCTC-approved programs on other campuses. The SMDR is distinct from any assessment of subject matter knowledge demonstrated through CSET examination or completion of an education emphasis major.Skip to Navigation
