Professional Teaching Background

Mauro Staiano received his BA in English with a teaching emphasis in 1995 and his MA in Teaching Writing in 2007, both from HSU. He began his teaching career in the Czech Republic where he taught English at the Czech Technical University’s School of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering and Charles University’s School of Law. Since completing HSU’s credential program in 1998, he has been teaching at Eureka High School.

Professional Interests

Perhaps thanks to his early days in alternative education, Mauro has always valued cross-curricular integration and process/project-based learning. Also a bit of a tech-geek, he incorporates technology into his instruction whenever possible. Mauro believes strongly that school should be a safe space for all students and has been the advisor for EHS’s Gay-Straight Alliance, the YEAH! Club, for many years.

Courses Taught

At HSU, Mauro teaches Secondary Curriculum Instruction, English (SED 733) and Secondary Seminar, English (SED 746) and taught First Year Reading and Composition (ENG 100) for several semesters.

At the secondary level, Mauro has taught a broad range of students and courses, including core English at the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade levels; Junior Composition; Core Support; and 10th Grade Literature. He currently teaches Senior AP English Literature and Composition, Freshman English, and Freshman English Support.

Outside Interests

When not busy responding to student work, Mauro enjoys spending time in the kitchen—these days charcuterie from locally raised hogs and sourdough bread are particular obsessions—and with his wife, Kateřina, and daughter, Amelia, playing Czech card games, working in the garden, and wrangling the family pets, two runner ducks and a golden doodle. Mauro also plays bass in the Eureka City Schools faculty band, Staff Infection, rides his bike to school when the weather is nice, and plays and coaches soccer several times a week.
