Biological Sciences Seminar Series

HSU Campus
Dr. Rick Zechman, CNRS Associate Dean, will present:
“Molecular Phylogenetics and evolution of the green seaweeds (and a previously unrecognized lineage of “deep-water” algae).”

This talk will provide an introduction to the methodological and computational issues of phylogentic analysis, and will focus on the phylogeny of marine green algae and their 1.5 billion years of evolutionary history. In particular, the phylogeny of the class Ulvophyceaea, within which most macroscopic green seaweeds are classified, will be discussed in the context of morphological and ecological diversification. These diverse organisms are among the dominant primary producers of marine benthic habitats around the world, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Dr. Zechman will also discuss his research on a previously unrecognized lineage of green seaweeds that occur in "deep-water" ma-rine habitats (down to 200m). These early diverging green algae, the Palmophyllales, are among the deepest occurring photosynthetic organisms and provide potential insights into the nature of the ancestral chlorophyte.
