Trails, Rails and (T)Rails: The Future of the Humboldt Bay Rail Corridor

Time: 6:00 pm-7:30 pm

Join us for the ninth annual Victor T. Schaub Memorial Lecture on local politics. The Humboldt Bay Rail Corridor has been the focus of a struggle between community groups who wish to preserve and improve it for restored rail service and those who want to convert the unused section of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad into a bike and pedestrian trail. This year's panel discussion will explore the compromise reached late last year between local trail and rail advocates. Learn what’s involved in the compromise solution and plans for its implementation.

Panelists will be Bill Kier, North Coast Rail Authority board member; Judy Hodgson, editor of the North Coast Journal and member of the Humboldt Trails Council; Dan Hauser, former executive director of the North Coast Railroad Authority and general manager of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad; and Sam Pennisi, former Arcata mayor and rail advocate. The panel will be moderated by Cliff Berkowitz, operations manager at KHUM. Refreshments will be provided.

The Victor Schaub Memorial Lecture series was established in honor of Victor Schaub, an Arcata civil attorney and professional mediator. He was elected to the City Council in 1988 and served two terms, until 1996. He served as mayor from 1990-95. Schaub died in 2004 at the age of 60.
