Introduction to River Kayaking

This course on beginning whitewater kayaking will cover the basics and give you an overview of river travel and safety. The outing includes an exciting and informative day of kayaking on one of the local rivers, the exact location depending on flows. You will learn to read water and understand basic river orientation. Instruction will cover eddy turns, peel outs, river ferrying and paddling techniques. Additional activities may include a river safety section that involves the use of basic river safety equipment specifically adapted for kayaking situations.

Introduction to Stand Up Paddling

As the ancient Hawaiian form of surfing, Stand Up Paddle Surfing has reemerged as a popular and fun fitness form. The introduction course provides the essential information and skills needed to enjoy paddling on flat water. Enjoy the sights of our local waterfront, while getting a fun workout at the same time. Topics covered will include equipment, basic paddling technique and board maneuvering as well as health benefits.

ZMF 2013 Concert Series: “Participants Marathon Concert"

The final concert of the festival is a celebration as well as a marathon, and a culmination of the hard work of the participants. The program will feature music by Carl Schimmel, Steve Reich, Emil Handjiev, Glenn Kotche, Larry London, Ivan Trevino and more, including young solo performers from around the world. Audience members are welcome to come and go over the span of four hours!

This concert is presented as part of the Zeltsman Marimba Festival 2013 Concert Series: eight programs of marimba music featuring some of the world’s top keyboard percussion artists in Arcata, California. The annual marimba festival takes place in a different location each year. This summer’s festival, based at Humboldt State University, brings together faculty and participants from 13 states and 10 countries to perform and collaborate. Purchase tickets at the door (45 minutes prior)
