Humboldt State’s CERT (Campus Emergency Response Team) Academy is scheduled Friday, July 26, through Sunday, July 28 and faculty, staff and students are encouraged to serve as CERT volunteers, who would assist first responders in the event of a major earthquake or comparable emergency.
Academy training will take place in the Emergency Operations Center, SBS 179, from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and from 8:30-4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The University is seeking applications from staff, faculty and student volunteers, who can fill out a Participant Application Form (see link below). Staff and faculty are required to obtain a manager’s or department chair’s signature, and submit the form to Jan Marnell, University Police Department.
Campus teams comprise trained volunteer staff, faculty and students from many different departments and divisions. Each team’s members would meet and deploy as a unit in the event of a major campus emergency, following the framework of HSU’s Emergency Plan. CERT tasks include, but are not limited to:
* Executing light search and rescue, extricating trapped persons
* Providing medical first aid and triage
* Preventing and suppressing incipient fires and supporting emergency field operations
The CERT Academy flyer is posted at humboldt.edu/emergencymgmtprogram.
General information on CERT is posted at www.fema.gov/community-emergency-response-teams.
