Belize Archaeology Field School Meeting

Behavioral and Social Sciences Building
Come to an informational meeting on the Belize Archaeology Field School.

The school involves survey and excavation at several Mayan sites as well as laboratory experience working directly with excavated Mayan artifacts. Field techniques, lectures on Mayan culture and history and instruction concerning artifact analysis will be provided.

The following courses are offered for the summer session:

ANTH 306: 3 units. Cultures of Belize: We will examine the issues of culture shock, stereotyping, misconceptions and misunderstandings, ethnocentrism and intercultural communication.

ANTH 357: 3 units. Field Archaeology: The principal focus of this course will be instruction in the basic field techniques required both in the field, cultural resource management and in more strict research settings.

Exploring Textiles: Knitting One Stitch at a Time - Beginner

HSU Recreation and Wellness Center
Knitted fabrics are fairly new in the history of textiles, approximately 300 years of archaeology samples have been discovered to date. Knitting is a portable craft that can be worked in the leisurely environment of your home or can travel with you anywhere in the world! Learn the basics of knitting while creating a variety of projects; miniature bags, a basic hat and hand clothes. Knit the 4 basic structures: stockinette, garter, rib and seed stitches. Discover how to use 2 colors of yarn in a project, the many traits of natural and synthetic fibers, and begin to fix common mistakes every knitter experiences. Every project will introduce you to techniques that will lay the foundation towards more complex knitting. Examples of a large variety of knitted projects will be shared to reinforce techniques you learn, and will inspire you to begin imagining what your future projects will be.
