Aaron Corcoran presents "Sonar Jamming in the Bat-Moth Arms Race."

Aaron Corcoran is an alumnus of Humboldt State, and has been studying the ability of the Tiger Moth (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) to jam bat echolocation for his PhD at Wake Forest University. Moths are equipped with organs called tymbals that produce a siren like sound. When bats encounter this sound while hunting, they lose their prey. In this talk Corcoran will discuss the evolution of these abilities and his current research.

Sexland's keynote speaker Virgie Tovar presents "There's Glitter in Fatlandia."

Virgie Tovar is a body image expert and coach. She is the editor of Hot & Heavy: Fierce Fat Girls on Life, Love and Fashion (Seal Press, November 2012). She holds a Master's degree in Human Sexuality with a focus on the intersections of body size, race and gender. After teaching "Female Sexuality" at the University of California at Berkeley, where she completed a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 2005, she went on to host "The Virgie Show" (CBS Radio) in San Francisco. She is certified as a sex educator and was voted Best Sex Writer by the Bay Area Guardian in 2008 for her first book. Virgie and her work have been featured by MTV, the San Francisco Chronicle, Bust Magazine, Jezebel, 7x7 Magazine, XOJane, Golden Gate Express and SF Weekly. She lives in San Francisco and offers workshops, lectures and coaching worldwide. Contact her at

Join the HSU Lindy Hop Club for a night of dancing, prizes and more at the Hepcat Ball. The evening begins with a dance lesson from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by social dancing from 8 to 10 p.m.

Live music will be provided by the College of The Redwoods Jazz Orchestra. There will also be 'best dancer' and 'best vintage outfit' contests. 18 and over please.
