Becoming and Being an Advocate for Children

Time: 4:30 pm

Advocacy involves carefully crafting messages, building strong and helpful relationships between and among stakeholders, and telling stories. Advocacy also requires a deep understanding of the political, legal and administrative landscape.

Brent Duncan has spent much of his professional life advocating for comprehensive mental health services for children and youth, and the profession of school psychology. This workshop will cover the basics of advocacy at the local, state and national levels. Brent will share stories of his advocacy successes and failures at each of these levels. Graduate students in school psychology will share their perspectives on their recent experiences advocating at both the local and national levels.
