HSU Professor Lectures on Original Chagall Lithograph

Off Campus - See Listing
Humboldt State University Religious Studies Professor William Herbrechtsmeier will deliver a lecture on Sunday, March 2 at Temple Beth El in Eureka on an original Marc Chagall lithograph, The Death of Saul.

Herbrechtsmeier owns the work and is providing it to the Temple Beth El congregation on extended loan. He will speak at 2 p.m. about the early Biblical monarchy, which he calls “the first great narrative in all of human literature.” His brief lecture will highlight “the Shakespearean-like drama of the lives of Samuel, Saul, David and Jonathan.”

The public is invited to view the “Death of Saul” and attend Herbrechtsmeier’s lecture; refreshments will be served. The program is offered free of charge, but donations are welcome to the Temple Beth El Art Fund.

Oscar Night

Eureka Theater
On Sunday, March 2, the past and present will come together as the historic Eureka Theater's 75th Anniversary Jubilee Celebration meets the Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission's Oscar Party!

The event begins at 5:00 p.m. as guests arrive and walk the red carpet into the Streamline Moderne lobby of the Eureka Theater. Inside the lobby, guests can mingle and schmooze with fellow movie fans, sample scrumptious appetizers and partake in 1939 cocktails from the no host bar.

ABC's live telecast of the 86th Annual Academy Awards will begin at 5:30 p.m., projected on the big screen in the Eureka Theater auditorium at no charge for guests of the party. When on break, historic footage from Hollywood's Golden Age will be shown and chocolate Oscars will be given for accurate guesses of the winners for five Academy Award categories.

The event falls during the Eureka Theater’s 75th anniversary celebration and is part of their effort to increase support for restoration of the historic theater. This will be the Film Commission’s second year holding an Academy Awards party. Both the Eureka Theater and the Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission are not-for-profit entities.

Tickets $20 per person for the party (Awards Show is free for all party guests) and are on sale at Annex 39 in Eureka (located next door to the Eureka Theater), at the Eureka Chamber of Commerce, and online at
