Sustainable Tourism Conference

Come by the Sustainable Tourism Conference, Thursday April 24th from 10am-2pm!

There will be free workshops every half hour from 10:30-1:30 such as "Leave No Trace" and "Kayaking Ergonomics: Avoiding Paddle Injury."

Stop by the business showcase featuring local tourism companies and discover opportunities for trips, tours, eco lodging, international exchange, local chocolate classes and so much more! An HSU Recreation Administration student senior project.

McCrone Awards Banquet

Humboldt State University’s Sponsored Programs Foundation will host the McCrone Promising Faculty Scholars & Graduate Fellowship Awards on Thursday, Apr. 24, at 4 p.m. in the Great Hall of the College Creek Apartments.

The awards recognize the accomplishments of HSU’s newer faculty members and an outstanding graduate student. They are named after former HSU President Alistair McCrone, who led the university from 1974 to 2002.

2014 Art Graduates Exhibition Awards Reception

The “2014 Art Graduates Exhibition” is on display in the Reese Bullen Gallery from Thursday, April 24 through Saturday, May 17. The exhibit showcases the artworks of current students receiving art degrees from HSU and concludes the gallery’s Humboldt State University Centennial Year Exhibition Series. A public reception and brief awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 24, from 5-7 p.m.

Native American Sovereignty: A Sustainable Paradigm

As part of the Sustainable Futures Speaker Series, Christopher Peters will present “Native American Sovereignty: A Sustainable Paradigm.”

Christopher Peters (Pohlik-lah/Karuk) is owner and principal consultant for Red Deer Consulting, an independent firm that provides identity-based cultural advising, mentoring and capacity building services for tribal communities. For the past 25 years, Chris has also served as the president and CEO of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, a 36-year-old Native American Public foundation that provides grants and technical support to indigenous peoples throughout Native America.

Over the past 40 years Chris has been actively engaged in social justice organizing, protecting sacred sites, working for holistic community renewal, and supporting the revitalization of cultural healing traditions and strategies. His work includes close partnerships with local, national and international honored tribal elders. He is especially focused on the renaissance of sacred knowledge and Earth Renewal ceremonies of the Yurok People. He has a BS degree from the University of California at Davis and has also earned a MA degree in Counseling Psychology from Stanford University.

The Sustainable Futures Speaker Series is presented by the Environment & Community Graduate Program and the Schatz Energy Research Center.

The first women actors on the English stage pioneer a profession in PLAYHOUSE CREATURES by April De Angelis, performed for two weekends in Gist Hall Theatre: April 24-26 and May 1-3 at 7:30 p.m., matinee at 2 p.m. on May 4. There’s comedy, drama and tragedy backstage as well as on the stage in this provocative glimpse of women lost to history, whose legacy greets us from every stage and screen. Directed by Mark Swetz, produced by Humboldt State U. Theatre, Film & Dance dept.
