INTRODUCTION TO VECTOR IMAGE ILLUSTRATION

Formerly called the Adobe Creative Suite 6 certificate program, the HSU Certificate Program in Digital Communications & Imaging has expanded to include the newest technologies and resources.

Discover a diversity of Digital Design Tools to create dynamic content for digital, social and print output. HSU College of eLearning & Extended Education offers instructor-led, hands-on training to help you develop the skills necessary to complete creative projects for professional, personal and academic communication.

On-campus lab instruction will be offered utilizing Adobe Creative Suite Photoshop®, InDesign® and Illustrator.® Academic software discounts are available, although purchase of software is not necessary. Faculty will provide information on similar low-cost and freeware software available for personal and professional use.

Each course is a stand-alone series and offered as an introduction to the subject. The faculty are knowledgeable and able to answer advanced questions. Students work individually in the lab on Macintosh computers. Within these software applications PC users will find the software techniques easy to use. Knowledge of computer basics required.

Though not required, upon enrollment in any of the courses and with the purchase of an HSU ID card ($5), you will be eligible to purchase academic software and subscriptions from the HSU Bookstore at substantial savings. Faculty will provide information on similar freeware software available for personal and professional use. Open Lab hours are available to enrolled students for the remainder of the semester.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

Earn a Certificate of Completion from the HSU College of eLearning & Extended Education upon completion of any three courses. Certificate courses will be offered in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Intro to Adobe InDesign®

InDesign simplifies publishing features and allows you to successfully publish your books, newsletters, online promotions, as well as print projects from simple one- to multiple-page designs. Learn this streamlined and effective page layout program that offers the advantage of placing linked media, then integrating and editing the links with Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat.

This class is a hands-on exploration into the InDesign page layout, type and linked image features. You will learn the use of tools, menus and panels to create single and complex multi-page documents. Basic typographic terminology will be defined and applied, including special text effects.

Through a series of in-class exercises, you will achieve an understanding of layer attributes, master pages, guides and margins, auto-page numbering, color definition, and linked graphic and multi-media formats.

This course will be offered in the lab utilizing Adobe InDesign CS6 software. Though purchase of the software is not necessary, academic software discounts are available.

Introduction to Editing Digital Photography

An introduction to editing for digital camera enthusiasts, professional photographers and other digital media artists. This course will be offered in the lab utilizing Photoshop and Bridge CS6 software. Though purchase of the software is not necessary, academic software discounts are available. The instructor will provide information on similar low-cost software and freeware available for personal and professional use.

This fast-paced course, aimed at all users from beginners to professionals, offers an introduction to basic digital image management and editing, as well as hands-on experience learning image-editing tools, strategies and techniques. You will learn the ease of working on layers, allowing a non-destructive and easily restored workflow. With on-screen demonstration throughout, you will complete a series of supplied exercises utilizing layer masks and adjustments, painting, repairing, filters and effects.

Techniques learned in Photoshop are easily transferred to Photoshop Elements.

Advanced Adobe Photoshop

This one-day course is an excellent "beyond-the-basics" opportunity to learn the tricks and techniques that maximize the professional potential of Photoshop CS6.

The instructor will demonstrate complex features and timesaving actions, empowering participants to work in an advanced Photoshop environment. This course will build on basic skills gained in the Introduction to Digital Imaging course.

Explore advanced image and color adjustments, retouch and repair techniques, channel features and advanced compositing. Manipulate your images on layers using complete color control. Gain an understanding of color management, ICC profiles and quality print consistency. Learn to create a slideshow and manage image files, metadata, including copyright information, from within the Adobe Bridge application.

No materials are required. Instruction will be demonstrated on a large overhead screen with the hands-on capability to follow each step using supplied files. You will have the opportunity to discuss each stage of the process by asking questions and receiving immediate feedback.

Prerequisite: Intro to Editing Digital Photography or a basic knowledge of the Photoshop application. This course will be offered in the lab utilizing Photoshop and Bridge CS6 software. Creativity With Your Digital SLR Camera

Get started in digital photography and expand your creativity with your digital SLR camera. We'll begin with the basics of how to set up your digital camera and how to maximize operation while shooting JPEG or Camera Raw as well as how to care for and protect camera body and lenses.

Once you know how to control your camera, manipulate shutter speed and depth of field, you’re ready to improve your composition and creativity while capturing light in your digital images.

You'll practice shooting a mix of techniques and then learn how to save and manage your images into workflow with Adobe Bridge CS6® and Photoshop CS6®.

Creativity with Adobe Camera Raw

Learn how to use Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) as you open your Raw or JPEG image files from Bridge in Photoshop CS6® (or Adobe Lightroom®). Maximize creativity using a non-destructive workflow to prepare your images for making inkjet prints or for use in print or online publications.

You’ll learn how to prepare a single image file or several at once to improve efficiency while making corrections in white balance, exposure or other in-camera problems.

Introduction to Vector Image Illustration

For the artist and non-artist alike, this course offers simple techniques and advanced resources to communicate using bold, sharp imagery. Learn to utilize the crisp line capacities of vector illustration, used extensively for logos, ads, posters, as well as quick-to-load web images. You will complete a variety of hands-on exercises familiarizing you with the efficiency of drawing and editing digital vector images with pen tools; converting text to art; auto-tracing photographic images into outlined graphics; applying special effects and painting with color, textures and gradients. Though this is an introductory course, you will be introduced to several advanced vector illustration tricks and capabilities. Course utilizes Adobe Illustrator CS6® and Bridge CS6®.

Instructors

MARK LARSON is a now retired journalism professor who taught photojournalism and Adobe Photoshop®, and he continues to free-lance his images to newspapers, magazines and a variety of clients. His teaching mantra in photography is: “Learn to control your camera and expand your creativity — avoid the ‘PhD’ (push here dummy) approach — and have fun, especially with Photoshop.”

ANNIE REID is a designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter who works from her North Coast studio. Her artwork has been reproduced in both national and international projects. Through teaching, Reid has shared her enthusiasm for digital media with others for over 20 years (See Annie Reid's website for more information).
