Humboldt State University was established in 1913.

These courses offer hands-on training so you can complete creative projects for professional, personal and academic communication.

With purchase of an HSU ID card ($5), registered students are entitled to educationally-priced software from the HSU Bookstore, and use of campus computer labs during open hours.

Intro to Photoshop® & Image Editing

With Annie Reid

This fast-paced course for beginners to professionals offers an introduction to basic digital image management and editing. Whether you are a digital camera enthusiast, professional photographer or social media marketer, this lecture and demonstration-based course will give you the image-editing tools, strategies and techniques you need.

Learn to work with layers, layer masks and adjustments, painting and repairing tools, filters and effects. The course will utilize Adobe Photoshop and Bridge software, which students can easily transfer to Photoshop Elements.

Intro to Adobe InDesign®

With Amy Barnes

InDesign simplifies the publishing of books, newsletters, and online promotions and print project designs. Learn this streamlined and effective page layout program where you can place linked media, then integrate and edit these links with Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat.

You will explore InDesign page layout, type and linked image features, while learning to use tools, menus and panels to create single and complex multi-page documents.

Through a series of in-class exercises, you will achieve an understanding of layer attributes, master pages, guides and margins, auto-page numbering, color definition and more.

This course will utilize Adobe InDesign CS6.

Introduction to Vector Image Illustration

For the artist and non-artist alike, Illustrator offers everyone the opportunity to create beautiful graphics. No prior drawing skills are necessary! You will learn the simple techniques and advanced vector illustration tricks to create eye-catching imagery. Learn to utilize the crisp line capacities of vector illustration, focusing mainly on logos, ads, and quick-to-load web images. The instructor will guide you through online Color Resources to select a theme for your logo, branding and marketing identity. Learn to create images from a photo, illustration or clip-art icons.

Through in-class demonstration and hands-on practice, you will learn to draw and edit digital vector images with pen tools; convert text to art for personalized identity branding; auto-trace photographic images into outlined graphics; apply special effects and paint with color, textures and gradients. You will also learn the diversity and ease of working on layers to simplify image management.

Advanced Adobe Photoshop

This one-day course is an excellent "beyond-the-basics" opportunity to learn the tricks and techniques that maximize the professional potential of Photoshop CS6.

The instructor will demonstrate complex features and timesaving actions, empowering participants to work in an advanced Photoshop environment. This course will build on basic skills gained in the Introduction to Digital Imaging course.

Explore advanced image and color adjustments, retouch and repair techniques, channel features and advanced compositing. Manipulate your images on layers using complete color control. Gain an understanding of color management, ICC profiles and quality print consistency. Learn to create a slideshow and manage image files, metadata, including copyright information, from within the Adobe Bridge application.

No materials are required. Instruction will be demonstrated on a large overhead screen with the hands-on capability to follow each step using supplied files. You will have the opportunity to discuss each stage of the process by asking questions and receiving immediate feedback.

Prerequisite: Intro to Photoshop & Image Editing or a basic knowledge of the Photoshop application. This course will be offered in the lab utilizing Photoshop and Bridge CS6 software. Though purchase of the software is not necessary, academic software discounts are available. The instructor will provide information on similar low-cost and freeware software available for personal and professional use.
