While Humboldt State is best known for natural science programs, Art is actually one of the most popular majors on campus (second only to Biology).
Studio art majors at HSU can specialize in areas like ceramics, drawing, graphic design, jewelry, lithography, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
You'd also be hard pressed to find a more vibrant community of artists. The U.S. Census Bureau cites Humboldt County as home to more working artists per capita than any other county in California. Likewise, Eureka (just seven miles down the road from HSU) was named the "Number One Small Arts in Town in America" by John Villani, author of The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America. Eureka is also home to HSU's First Street Gallery, where students get hands-on experience curating exhibits.
