As a frequent stroller at the Arcata Marsh, in Arcata, California, my appreciation for its constructed landscape, layered as it is with history and purpose, has deepened over the years. These new photo-collages continue a project about the Marsh I began in 1997, for the photography collective, Water in the West. In the interval, both the Marsh and my project have evolved and changed. The present collages combine scanning electron microscope images of tiny bits of Marsh vegetation that I collected, with views of the scenes from which they came. The effect of these unlikely juxtapositions could reflect how natural processes overlay and interact with the man-made at the Marsh, where they create an environment both useful and full of delight.
