HSU Logging Sports Team Takes Top Awards at Recent Competition

The HSU Logging Sports team demonstrated their skills at the annual CAL Conclave competition hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The competition was held at the Cal Poly Swanton Pacific Ranch located just north of Santa Cruz, California. The event brought together several college teams from California and Oregon. In addition to HSU, Cal Poly, UC Berkley, Modesto Junior College, and Central Oregon Community College all took part in the competition.

This year's HSU Logging Sports team features nearly 60 students who compete in a variety of events including axe throw, chopping events, traverse, choker set race, single buck, and double buck. A contingent of 24 students traveled to the Swanton Pacific Ranch to participate in the recent November competition. The HSU Logging Sports teams placed first and second in the overall competition. In addition to winning the overall competition, many of the team members placed first in the individual events. HSU senior Jess Engle received the Belle of the Woods award for the overall best female competitor. Engle is no stranger to logging sports competitions, Logging Sports team president Ed Peebles summed up Engle's contribution by saying "In fact she got Belle of the Woods just about everywhere we went." Peebles continued to explain that this Spring will be Engle's last semester with the team as she is graduating this year and "will be sorely missed".

The CAL Conclave was excellent practice for the logging sports team which will participate in the 72nd annual AWFC (Association of Western Forestry Clubs) Conclave in early 2011. The AWFC Conclave will be hosted by Cal Poly at their San Luis Obispo campus from March 21st to March 25th 2011. The conclave will feature competition between 12 schools from the Western United States.
