Humboldt Geographers Win Big at California Geographical Society Meeting

This last weekend, more than 20 Humboldt undergraduate geographers attended the 70th annual meeting of the California Geographical Society in San Jose, CA.  The majority of them presented original research papers, posters, or maps.  Several attendees commented on how well all of our students presented, in addition to the confidence and professionalism they all brought to the three-day conference.

Our students brought home a number of awards from the conference, including the meeting's three undergraduate research paper prizes: Nick Burdine, first place for "Spaces of Consumption: Homelessness and Commodification of Natural Beauty in the Arcata Community Forest"; Cristina Bauss, second for "Mapping Marijuana Cultivation Sites and Water Storage in the Redwood Creek Watershed, Southern Humboldt County"; and Monica Moreno-Espinoza, third for "Mediterranean Refugee Crisis: Italian Student Attitudes Towards Political Migrants." Our students also earned the top two prizes for the map competition: Joben Penuliar, first place for "Manila Bay," and Elyse Warren, second place "Hawaii." These are in addition to many travel grant awards that many of our students were awarded that enabled them to attend.

Congratulations geographers and thanks to all of the faculty involved, in particular Drs. Matthew Derrick and Amy Rock.
