Advising

Academic advising at Cal Poly Humboldt and the History Major:

Advising is an important part of a history major’s relationship to the program, especially in the early years. It is essential to find out who your major advisor is, know the major and general education requirements and meet regularly with your advisor to ensure progress toward graduation and completion of the B.A. degree in history.

Answers to most questions concerning your status as a student, credit toward your degree and other questions relating to coursework and advising can be found at the Student Center website.

Who is my advisor?

When you declared as a history major you were assigned a member of the history department faculty as your major advisor. The name of your advisor is listed in the Advisor section of your Student Center page.

Getting the most out of advising:

Your history major advisor can assist you in planning your coursework, choosing courses for registration each semester, and in succeeding in coursework in your history major courses. You advisor can also advise you on general education requirements, but be sure that you understand what these requirements are and how to meet them. Information on advising can be found hereThe Humboldt Course Catalog can be found here. For information on general education (GE) requirements go here.

When you meet with your major advisor you should prepare by completing a copy of the History Major WorksheetPDF icon (available here) or History Education Concentration Worksheet (available here) and bringing it with you. You should also print a copy of your DARS report (which you can access and print out from the Student Center) and consider how you will meet the remaining requirements for your major and general education.

Remember that your advisor is also a history professor with a full course-load. Please prepare well for meetings with your advisor by preparing a list of questions and concerns and completing and printing out your major contract and DARS report. Do not expect your advisor to simply tell you what to do. Your advisor is there to help guide you and answer your questions. He or she can do this best if you have thought about your plans and the questions you need answered before meeting with your advisor.
