Legendary HSU Basketball Coach Dies

Tom Wood

Alumni and community supporters gathered in Lumberjack Arena to remember Tom Wood, the longtime men's basketball coach who passed away in August. He was 68.

Sports writers say Wood built HSU's men's basketball program into one of the most consistent winners in the West region.

In memory of Wood, current men's head coach Steve Kinder has dedicated the 2016-17 season. Players will wear a black patch with 'TW463' signifying Wood's 463 career wins with the program. A scholarship fund is also being established in his and his wife’s honor.

The HSU community also recently lost alumnus and employee Cary Belak, who worked with many HSU students in the Educational Talent Search TriO program.

As an HSU student, Belak was a member of the Marching Lumberjacks—through which he met some of his lifelong friends—and graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems. He joined Talent Search in 1992 and is remembered as a loyal friend with a good sense of humor.
