Winter Updates for Humboldt State Alumni

Winter graduation

The spring Commencement Ceremonies are where you’d expect to see new alumni earning their degree, but did you know hundreds of students earn their degrees at the end of the fall semester? This year more than 700 HSU students completed their degrees at the end of the fall semester and Humboldt Alumni was on hand to honor their achievement by hosting the second annual Fall Graduation Reception in the university’s Great Hall.

It’s always a treat to welcome new alumni, and this was no exception. The always-popular photo booth was snapping shots for the entire event, so be sure to check out the full set on Flickr.

Download your fall graduation photo

Downloading your photo from Flickr is easy. If you attended the event and want access to your full-size image, simply browse the photo collection, click on the one you want and the photo will load in a new window. From there, locate the three dots and click and you’ll find the option to “Download/All Sizes.” For more help, visit Flickr’s Help blog.

Photos can be downloaded in full size for printing, so if you attended the event, be sure to flip through the pages to find your pic, then just right click (and a hearty welcome to the Humboldt Alumni association too!).

Roadshows Roll On

Alumni Roadshows recently stopped in on Waikiki, Redding, Monterey, and Walnut Creek. Click the photos to head over to Flickr and checkout photos from these great events!

There are 11 more stops for the Centennial Roadshow! Be sure to register now to secure your spot at these great events. Look for the full schedule in this newsletter’s upcoming events, or click here.

Meet the 2014 Alumni Scholarship Winners
Laura Kiewel, Psychology

Laura Kiewel Laura Kiewel, a major in Psychology, was moved to return to school and focus on her career after witnessing her uncle complete his degree following a lay off nearly 10 years ago.

Now, Kiewel is poised to enter her senior year with a near-perfect GPA as she works on earning a bachelor’s degree in the Academic Research Developmental psychology program at HSU.

Kiewel supports her academics by working as both a teaching and research lab assistant while maintaining a part time job off campus.

After earning her degree, Kiewel plans on attending a Ph.D. program in Human Development where she’ll research positive interventions in early child trauma.

Tyler Warren, Liberal Studies Elementary Education

Tyler Warren After seeing campus on a tour with his aunt—a 1970 sociology grad—nearly five years ago, Tyler Warren has been waiting to transfer to the HSU campus ever since. The Napa-valley native was immediately attracted to the open and accepting campus culture and set his sights on attending HSU after completing three years at a junior college.

Seeking a career that is both rewarding and meaningful, Warren enrolled in HSU’s Elementary Education program. Since then he’s been able to volunteer in a local kindergarten classroom and has joined the Student California Teachers Association.

To enhance his teaching career, Warren plans on becoming fluent in Spanish and hopes to go abroad to teach English after graduating in 2016. Warren also plans on earning a teaching credential at HSU.

Volunteer Opportunity
Become an Alumni Ambassador

Humboldt State University is seeking alumni interested in joining the Alumni Ambassador program. Alumni Ambassadors help recruit students at college fairs, have one-on-one talks with potential students or attend Humboldt State receptions throughout the state.

This year Humboldt reached record enrollment of nearly 8,300 hundred students. HSU owes a lot to the dedicated alumni ambassadors who reach out to prospective students and help them learn about the amazing experience Humboldt State has to offer.

You can learn more by visiting http://alumni.humboldt.edu/volunteer, by emailing alumni@humboldt.edu, or signing up at an Alumni Centennial Roadshow event!

Your gifts support HSU students

Humboldt Alumni are big supporters of HSU students and programs, and your gifts make a real difference. During the last year, alumni support for HSU reached unprecedented levels. Your generous gifts through the Humboldt Loyalty Fund have supported scholarships, classroom technology upgrades, new lab equipment and more. Thank you!
