Forestry’s First Four-Year Working to Create Scholarship
Every month the Forever Humboldt newsletter will highlight ways that you, the alumni of Humboldt State University, are supporting HSU through volunteering, giving, and promoting.
Bob Archibald has always appreciated the benefits of his college education. “I was the first in my family to get a college degree,” Archibald says. “That degree allowed me to go to officer candidate school and opened the door to a second career working for the Bureau of Land Management. Both of my careers were influenced by the forestry degree I earned at HSU.”
A 1959 alumnus, Archibald takes pride in another first—he was a member of the first, four-year graduating class of the Department of Forestry.
Two years ago, Archibald decided he wanted to ensure today’s students have the same opportunities he had by attending HSU. He began his quest to establish an annual Forestry scholarship by seeking out the other members of the inaugural Forestry class of ’59. With help from the HSU Philanthropy & Advancement Offices, Archibald found 11 class members and reached out to them and their families for contributions. Of these alums and their families, seven individuals made gifts totaling nearly $8,000. The efforts and generosity of these supporters led to the awarding of the first “Pathfinder Commemorative Scholarship,” to Anna Gresham from Oakland, Calif., a Forestry Hydrology student who posted a 3.88 grade point average during the 2013-14 academic year.

Alumni Scholarship Recipients
Aedan McCluskey and Shawn Thompson are the Spring 2015 recipients of the Alumni Scholarship. The Alumni Scholarship is awarded once each semester to two students related to HSU alumni. Recipients are selected by a committee of HSU alumni.
Aedan McCluskey, the daughter of an HSU alumna, has loved learning about animals since she was a child. By volunteering at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo and working in a veterinary office, McCluskey pursued her dreams of working professionally with animals even before attending HSU.
At the urging of her mother, who fondly remembers earning her Recreation Administration degree, McCluskey enrolled in HSU's wildlife program. She's also earning a minor in Spanish and hopes to enter a career protecting and conserving wildlife.
Shawn Thompson, also the daughter of an HSU alumna, has spent more than a decade involved in the welfare of her community in both public schools and mental health. She is currently at work on a Master’s of Social Work degree. Thompson is actively involved with Hospice of Humboldt and is developing ways to train grief-support volunteers as her capstone project.
As a social worker, Thompson aims to build on her teaching experience and expand her problem solving skills by working with families to develop secure relationships, supportive environments, and a more resilient community.
