"Outdoorsy" Instagram Culture and 19th Century Art: Imperialism in Our National Parks
- Sofia DiGregorioEnvironmental StudiesUndergraduate Student
Curated "Outdoorsy" social media accounts rival 19th century idealized landscape paintings, allowing people to present themselves as adventurous and fulfilled by sharing beautiful photos from their travels. These visualized false landscapes present a new age of imperialist beliefs as themes of colonialism have continued to live on through generations in our culture. In western culture, landscape has often been seen as a commodity to be presented and reconstructed for our enjoyment throughout history. Although Instagram culture has contributed to many changes within our national parks, this “new” culture of objectifying and commodifying the landscape is really nothing new at all.

This study explores the historical origins and contemporary views of “The Star Spangled Banner” as the national anthem and three “unofficial anthems” in the United States. We define music as rhetoric and describe its role in promoting patriotism and fashioning identities. We conduct a rhetorical analysis of “The Star Spangled Banner” and discuss how it has become a rallying point - figuratively and literally - for first amendment rights by examining the wide array of actions and reactions to it. We describe the backstories of three unofficial national anthems and analyze how they have been transformed and appropriated by different groups and movements in the United States.
"The All-American Boy": Ted Bendy as an Example of White Privilege and Toxic Masculinity
- Grace McKendryAnthropologyUndergraduate Student
Ted Bundy is one of the United States’ most infamous serial killers. He has been described as being charismatic and intelligent, despite the fact that he murdered dozens of women in the 1970s. Ted Bundy’s motivation for killing, and reactions to him, may reveal some potentially problematic aspects about what mainstream society in the United States values. A trend that made itself apparent was the idea of Ted Bundy being a charming and intelligent person being a myth created by Bundy himself. This myth was made popular by other writers and journalists over the last 30 years.
"Think of the Children!": Understanding Parental and Community Opposition to Critical Race Theory in Schools
Daniela Tierra, Sociology Graduate Student
College of Arts, Humanities & Social SciencesSince 2020, opposition to Critical Race Theory (CRT) in schools has been a highly controversial topic. The heated topic and buzzwords on social media and conservative news media look dramatically different than the CRT of academic disciplines. This begs the question, what do opponents of CRT believe it to be, and why are they opposed to it? This research utilizes open-ended qualitative interviews to uncover what opponents of CRT believe it to be and why people are opposed to it.

- Mary VirnocheSociologyFaculty
This poster presents a pilot assessment of a career seminar required for sophomore or junior Sociology, and Criminology & Justice Studies Majors. On the first day, students completed a self-assessment survey measuring confidence in any existing materials and professional skills. All students indicated that support of their professional tool kit was "very important" to "important." Post-course assessment indicated that most engaged heavily in assignments supporting low confidence areas such as networking, translating their major skills and experiences for a job or internship search, and developing organizing systems for their job/internship search.

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, commonly known as 2,4-D, is a widely utilized pesticide in weed control. 2,4-D is considered toxic, and may pose detrimental effects to wildlife if used recklessly. Here we sought to quantitatively analyze for the presence of 2,4-D on the fur of local fauna found in Humboldt county, namely Gray fox, Brush rabbit, and Deer mice. We used purification techniques such as washes, as well as extraction techniques including liquid-liquid extraction, and analysis through gas chromatography (GC) in order to visualize 2,4-D. Positive results could spell trouble for the local wildlife, and have severe consequences.

This project presents a modern method to preserve and study the past. 3D Technology is taking over current research in the archaeology field. Agisoft Photoscan is a 3D rendering software that has aided in this new methodology and form of inquiry. The basis of this project is to process field data from the Dos Hombres to Gran Cacao Archaeological Project and configure a 3D model of excavation sites from the 2017 field season. The objective of this project is to provide a method to analysis and conserve archaeological artifacts, sites, and features. As a result of this research, a model will be produced to facilitate access to the archaeological project without being physically present.
