  Penelope Shaw, Study Abroad Coordinator

Picture of PenelopePenelope has been traveling all her life and is now encouraging students to do what she so loves. After living and teaching in London Penelope moved to Colombia and taught elementary school in Cali, traveling throughout South America while she was there. On landing in Arcata she taught at a local alternative school and then decided to continue her studies at HSU. While studying she discovered the world of international education and was hooked; here was the perfect combination of travel and education!
Recent journeys have taken her to Bhutan, a lifelong ‘bucket wish’ location, India, China, Guatemala and of course, the UK where it all started.

Megan Mefford, Coordinator of International Admission, Immigration and Advising & PDSOPicture of Megan

Megan has had the pleasure of working with international students at HSU since 2006. Megan is responsible for the day-to day operations of international admission, immigration and support advising for HSU international students. She advises international students through the admission process continuing her support through her ongoing advisement on immigration and academic policies. Megan is a graduate of Humboldt State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology (2004) and a Master’s degree in Education (2014). During her undergraduate degree, she studied abroad at the University of Ghana, Legon, spending much of that time outside the classroom traveling through Ghana to Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo and Benin. She has had the pleasure of visiting many other countries in Europe and Central America over the years. She loves beautiful Humboldt County and enjoys spending her free time with her family. Megan enjoys meeting and serving students from around the world.


Emily Kirsch, International Marketing and Recruitment Coordinator

Picture of EmilyEmily is responsible for the marketing of Humboldt State University to international students, as well as recruitment and management of relations with China, Brazil, the Middle East, and Europe.  She also does some student advising and helps with admissions, and works with special groups of sponsored students.  Emily is an HSU graduate, completing her BA in International Studies with a Chinese Studies emphasis in 2007.  She graduated with her Master’s in International Education degree at SIT Graduate Institute in 2014.  During her undergraduate degree, she spent one semester studying abroad at Xi’an International Studies University (XISU) in Xi’an, China, studying Mandarin Chinese.  Upon returning, she worked in the Office of Admissions at HSU before joining the Center for International Programs (CIP) in 2011.  She enjoys working with students from all over the world and welcoming them to the wonderful community of Humboldt - one of her very favorite moments is when new students see the giant redwoods or the ocean for the first time. 

Daeng Khoupradit, International Marketing and Recruitment CoordinatorPicture of Daeng  Daeng is an alumna of Humboldt State University where she graduated with a degree in International Business. She currently supports the Center for International Programs (CIP) as a Marketing and Recruitment Coordinator. Before joining the CIP team, Daeng has worked on campus at the MultiCultural Center, Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Institutional Research and Planning. When not working, Daeng enjoys cycling, gardening, backpacking in the Siskiyous, learning new languages, and traveling the globe as an exotic “fruit hunter".


Jenn Soderfelt, Associate Director of IELI

Picture of JennJenn manages the Center for International Programs office and is responsible for coordinating the annual International Education Week. She also has the pleasure of overseeing the International Student Intern and the International Cultural Festival organization. Jenn is an alumna of Humboldt State University, earning a degree in Liberal Studies, as well as a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential and has over ten years of experience working for HSU. She enjoys meeting the many different students that come through the Center for International Programs and looks forward to helping others achieve their international goals and enjoys serving HSUs diverse students. When not on campus, Jenn enjoys the company of her family and spends as much time in nature as possible.

Christiana Gomez Frye, Student Resource Coordinator

Picture of ChristianaChristiana coordinates resources and activities for international students. She is also the international student orientation coordinator. She is happy to be involved in promoting internationalism on campus and in our community through International Education Week, and a variety of special events and activities. Her door is always open to help students tap into all of the necessary and meaningful aspects to living and adjusting to life in Humboldt County. Christiana received her degree in Anthropology from Oregon State University and served in the United States Peace Corps in Honduras working with sustainable agricultural outreach programs. She has extensive experience working in program coordination and non-profit management. Christiana loves to travel and is thrilled to interact with students from all over the globe. She is committed to helping our students enjoy their experiences while studying at HSU. In her free time she is grateful for being able to frolic with her family and friends in the beautiful ocean and forests that surround us. Following those grand adventures she enjoys celebrating the bounty of local food, drink and art that make Humboldt a magical and unique place to live.

Kelli Zwillenberg, International Admissions and Immigration Coordinator

Picture of KelliKelli Zwillenberg received her B.A. from Rutgers University in Sociology in 1997. Before beginning her studies at the university, she studied abroad in Israel in 1993. She has taught English as a Second Language on campus during her time at university and then again while living in Washington, DC. Kelli is the Coordinator of IELI Admissions (including conditional admissions), and is in training to provide immigration services and support to IELI students. Outside of the office, Kelli enjoys traveling, cooking and discovering all of the beauty Humboldt County has to offer.
