Using SFTP with Windows

Cal Poly Humboldt recommends using the WinSCP application for Windows because it supports secure file transfer connections. Download and install WinSCP before following the instructions below, which are based on WinSCP 5.1.1

Step 1: Open WinSCP. If this is a new installation, select Launch WinSCP once installation is complete. If it's already installed, click on the WinSCP icon on the desktop or select the program from the Start menu.

Step 2: Enter the following information:

  • Server host name
  • Your Username and Password on the server

Click Save

Step 3: Enter a Site Name. You can also click once to select the Save password option if you do not want to enter the password each time you connect to the site. Click OK.

Step 4:  In the Login window, select the site you want to access by clicking once on the site name in the left pane.

  • If you have previously saved your password, just click Login to proceed
  • If you have not saved your password, click Edit, enter your password, and then click Login.

If you see a warning screen, just click Yes to continue connecting.

Once connected, you will see your local directory in the left pane and the web directory on the right.

Step 5: To upload your files, simply highlight them in the left pane and drag and drop them to the appropriate directory in the right pane.

Step 6: When you've finished uploading files, select Session, then Disconnect, then Close to exit WinSCP.
