Learning Lab Tutor
Learning Lab Tutors help other college students with their academic skills and study strategies, such as exam preparation, assistance with time management, or research for a paper. The position also involves assessing student needs, keeping records, making referrals to other campus resources, and performing office duties. Weekly paid training meetings are mandatory. A GPA of 2.7 or higher in college courses a minimum qualification.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders
SI Leaders lead two 50 minute peer-facilitated sessions per week for a targeted science class designed to help participants develop course specific academic and study skills. Responsibilities include planning for and using active learning and teaching strategies, meeting with the designated faculty and SI coordinator. Prior to first week of instruction each semester, SI leaders participate in a paid, mandatory training. Afterwards, there are paid group meetings for ongoing training and follow up. The SI coordinator observes each SI leader for at least one entire session and provides feedback. After 3 observations, it can be skipped by mutual agreement.
Students can apply by submitting a resume that includes their HSU id, a cover letter, the names of two professors as references, especially for the course they wish to supplement, and permission to print an unofficial transcript. There are often more openings fall semester, but some are hired in spring. Ongoing SI leaders have priority for any openings. Preference will be given to current SI leaders or applicants with tutoring or teaching experience. Students underrepresented in STEM majors as well as work-study eligible students are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be in good standing and have earned a B or higher in the targeted class.

Additional Job Opportunities
Tutors help and guide students to develop their own learning strategies. The tutor will help find answers to questions and help students learn methods to solve problems independently. The tutor will make suggestions to improve students' study skills for the class for which the students are being tutored. Tutors will be expected to attend an orientation each semester. Students are required to have received an A or a B in the class that they are tutoring, be enrolled in 6 units (undergraduates) or 4.5 units (graduate students) and recommendation from the Instructor.
Tutoring positions are typically open at the beginning of each semester. Applications are available throughout the academic year. All applications are reviewed, but the Tutoring Center hires on an as-needed basis. Applications can be requested at the Learning Center upon request. A complete application also includes a current unofficial transcript and current resume along with a faculty recommendation letter. CRLA Certified Tutors
Like entry level tutors, College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified tutors help and guide students to develop their own learning strategies. The CRLA certified tutor will help find answers to questions and help students learn methods to solve problems independently. The certified tutor will make suggestions to improve students' study skills for the class for which the students are being tutors. In order to earn the CRLA certified tutor status, a tutor must attend and participate in a total of 10 hours of tutor training classes and accumulate at least 25 hours of working with tutees. Like other tutors, CRLA certified tutors are also required to have received an A or a B in the class that they are tutoring, be enrolled in 6 units (undergraduates) or 4.5 units (graduate students) and have a faculty recommendation.
The hiring procedure for CRLA certified tutors is same as entry level tutors. The CRLA training is offered over the course of eight weeks in both the fall and spring semesters. All new and returning tutors are eligible for participating in the certification process. Math Tutoring Lab Tutors
Tutors in the Math Lab help college students develop math skills in algebra, pre-calculus and calculus. May also include tutoring statistics and/or other math classes if able. Duties include greeting students, describing the services of the math lab, and approaching students to find out how to help them are essential part of the position. Tutors are required to ask questions and guide students to solve problems rather than solving problems for tutees.
Hiring for the Math Tutoring Lab typically takes place at the beginning of the academic year, however job openings do open midyear on occasion. Writing Center Consultants
Writing Center consultants help other students organize and revise their writing assignments for courses in any subject area. Consultants meet with individual students in 30 minute blocks of time, either by appointment or on a drop-in basis. Consultants work with students to identify areas of a piece of writing that would benefit from revision, and assist the student's efforts to strengthen the overall paper, rather than proof-reading or making changes for the student. Regular paid meetings are mandatory. Applicants must have completed English 450 or equivalent prior to being hired.

Learning Center Reception Assistants
Reception assistants help run the daily operations of the Learning and Tutorial Center. Duties include greeting and referring students, answering phones, processing tutoring requests, scheduling appointments, and data entry. Other office tasks include filing, email correspondence, photo copying, and running errands. Students who have been awarded Federal Work Study are encouraged to apply.
Hiring typically takes place at the end of spring or beginning of the fall semester.
