Finding off-campus housing

Homecoming & Family Weekend

If your student is returning in the fall and planning to live off-campus, it’s not too early to start thinking about housing. Many houses and apartments become vacant in the summer, and fill up quickly as the fall semester nears. A housing shortage in the area affects students, and it’s important not to put off finding accomodations.

The end of the spring semester is a good time for students to start identifying what kind of housing they need, and start finding people who they would feel safe and comfortable sharing a living space with, if necessary.

Humboldt State doesn't secure off-campus housing for students but does provide a number of resources to help find homes and apartments. It’s a good idea for you to look over these resources as well, and help guide your student toward the housing that suits them best.

Start with HSU’s Off Campus Housing Guide, which includes a series of questions to identify the best living situation for your student. The guide also contains helpful advice for making good impressions with landlords, being prepared for the application and move-in processes, being a good neighbor, saving money on utilities, and moving out and getting a security deposit returned.

The Living Off Campus website also has resources, including a number of listings for local housing, links to transportation, and links to important community resources like renter’s rights.

HSU also has a housing liaison, who works one-on-one with students and families to answer housing questions and offer resources. Contact information is available on the Living Off Campus website.

In addition, HSU Housing & Residence Life is hosting two presentations for students to learn more about off-campus housing. The workshops take place April 19 and April 20.
