Recognizing and Dealing with Stress

With fall semester underway, now’s the time when students begin to feel the pressures of college life. To help combat stress, the California State University system recently launched the Red Folder Initiative to advise faculty and staff on how to best support students as they juggle the responsibilities of school, friends, family and work. Here are some tips from the CSU on how you can help your student healthily manage stress:

Recognize the signs of stress

  • Sudden decline in quality of work, grades
  • Repeated absences
  • Anger or hostility
  • Tearfulness, irritability, unusual apathy
  • Changes in physical appearance
  • Excessive sleep
  • Disoriented or “out of it”

Be proactive
Pay attention to the above signs and talk to your student early on if you recognize any significant changes in their routine or behavior.

Be direct
Don’t be afraid to ask your student directly if you feel they need some extra help. Have honest conversations about drugs and alcohol, and ask questions if they are feeling confused, or depressed.

Follow through
Educate yourself about campus resources, so that you can direct your student to appropriate programs and services if they need extra support.

Host a Parent Reception

HSU is hosting a series of parent receptions in November and December and we want you to help us organize one in your area!

We’re looking for parent volunteers to help us host parties in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, Portland, Ore. and Seattle, Wash. This will be a great opportunity to connect with other HSU parents and families and learn what to expect when your student comes home from college.

If you're interested, please contact the Humboldt Alumni & Engagement office at (707) 826-3132 or
