## Why Study Math At Humboldt?

Humboldt State's mathematics program is lively, student-centered, and distinguished for its production of future scholars, its pioneering work in math education, and its expertise in the application of mathematics principles to environmental sciences. Our curriculum enhances a student's appreciation of the art of rational reasoning and discourse. Students learn to apply abstract concepts to real life situations, such as managing financial portfolios, studying migrations of endangered species, and predicting urban traffic flows.

Students may pursue one of three concentations - mathematics, applied mathematics, or math education - in obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics at Humboldt State University. Applied mathematics students integrate mathematics with disciplines such as geology, oceanography, and wildlife management. The education option leads to a single-subject teaching credential, preparing students to teach in junior high and high schools. Our minor in biometry (statistics applied to biological sciences) benefits from collaboration with HSU's nationally renowned programs in natural resources and sciences.

By enhancing versatility and problem-solving skills, a mathematics degree prepares students to work in a variety of fields, from accounting to zoology. Humboldt students compete well for jobs in government, schools, and private industry. Some careers chosen by recent graduates include: mathematical modeling and statistical analysis (for both private corporations and government agencies), software development, microchip yield modeling, mortgage underwriting, and teaching in middle schools, high schools and community colleges. Humboldt math graduates also compete well for entrance to graduate schools and have pursued advanced degrees at more than 43 different universities. Humboldt is ranked first in the nation by the National Science Foundation among non-Ph.D. granting institutions for sending students on to doctoral programs and 5th among all universities in the nation.

The Mathematics department at Humboldt State University offers two undergraduate degree programs to choose from: Mathematics and Mathematics Education. Mathematics has two options: Pure Math and Applied Math. Please follow the link below for mor information on the differences between these.
