Why did you choose HSU?

Where better to study the environment than in a beautiful area surrounded by nature?

If we shuffled your iPod, what 5 songs would most likely come up first?

Not sure. I'm really bad with names, but I love music =)

Most embarrassing thing on your iPod?

Rancheras (but its all good, I love being Mexi)

How do you have fun in Humboldt County?

I have fun in Humboldt by exploring and going on adventures such as walking/hiking in the forest and at the beaches, or trying new sports and activities. I am just starting to get into biking and there are tons of mountain bike trails I want to go on. There are also cool courses at HSU like scuba, which I'm in now. I also like to kick back with friends and have a bonfire.

What will you always remember about HSU?

The adventures I went on with my friends either for class assignments or because of curiosity.

What are you passionate about?

Providing potable water to impoverished areas.

Outdoor spot you love?

Fern Canyon. It's BEAUTIFUL! I love going to Fern Canyon (in Prarie Creek State Park) after it rains and there is water flowing through the canyon and coming off the walls. It’s like stepping into a fantasy.

What has been your best experience at HSU?

Meeting exciting energetic people, including professors.

What are you plans after graduation?

After I graduate I will either take time to do a program like Americorps or the peace corps or I will jump straight into graduate school. In graduate school I want to study something water related and hopefully do part of my studies in Central or South America. In the end, I want to be helping people, and working with environmental water issues.

What's your favorite class at HSU?

That’s a hard one. I honestly can't answer that :) There's a new one every semester

Who was your favorite professor? Why?

Dr. Kristine Brenneman: She is a fisheries biology professor. She expects a lot from her students but she is a great professor. She genuinely cares about her students and always makes time for them.

Have any tips for new students?

Talk to your professor, all of the HSU professors I have had are friendly.

Plan ahead and look for research opportunities soon, ask professors about interest you have and how to pursue your goals, and have fun! College goes by faster than you would expect and its important to enjoy your surroundings.
