Welcome to the piano area at HSU!

We offer the best in performance joined with skillful training in collaborative piano, and piano pedagogy. Faculty members will guide you in the process of becoming a better artist, teacher and accompanist. Every year, HSU hosts a variety of renowned pianists. Many of the artists give inspiring master classes coaching Humboldt students. These sessions are free of charged and open to the public.

Students, faculty, visiting artists, staff, and community members all agree: the HSU Music Department's fleet of some 60 pianos is one of its greatest assets. From the concert grands used for performances to the workhorse practice grands and verticals, all are rigorously maintained to demanding professional standards. Harmonious sounding, responsive pianos are an integral part of daily musical life here at HSU.

  • With two Steinway concert grands, we have hosted numerous Gilmore Artists and Van Cliburn and Tchaikovsky competitions winners, as well as international stars such as Richard Goode, Menachem Pressler, and Peter Serkin.
  • We are one of few campuses to employ a full time piano technician - symbolic of the Department's dedication to the care and maintenance of this fine fleet.
  • Few other CSU campuses can match the quality and accessibility of our many practice grands. These are mostly Steinways, with both Mason & Hamlin and Baldwin instruments completing the inventory.
  • Our practice studios have no practice fees, and have an open schedule allowing virtually unlimited practice possibility.
  • We offer both rehearsal space and practice cubicles.
