What You'll Learn — A Comprehensive Education

Looking for an outstanding environment to study oceanography? Humboldt State offers a Bachelor's of Science degree in Oceanography; the only one offered in California. To understand how the ocean works, you'll first take classes in math and the core sciences: biology, chemistry, physics, and geology. Once you master the basics, you'll take courses with an oceanic focus, such as biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, geological oceanography and physical oceanography. You'll learn and practice the techniques needed to conduct research at sea and in the laboratory. Finally, you'll also gain the critical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills necessary for your success in the scientific and technical world.

Program Goals

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography, the program is designed such that each student will be able to:

1. Utilize scientific concepts from biology, chemistry, geology, physics and mathematics to understand the fundamental oceanographic processes and functions.

2. Employ appropriate sampling, laboratory and computer techniques to collect, measure and interpret oceanographic information.

3. Integrate their conceptual and technical understandings to address complex inter-disciplinary problems in oceanography.

4. Utilize reading, writing and oral skills to effectively communicate oceanographic information.

Cutting-Edge Research Techniques

We strongly believe in supplementing classroom education with lab and field research. Every senior student conducts scientific research projects with supervision and guidance from faculty. Many of our students present their projects even before they graduate. The end result? You graduate with more than a degree — you graduate with skills and experience.

Our Program Equals Your Success

Our students' strong foundation in science and oceanic studies enables them to excel in a wide variety of both private sector and governmental careers. Over 80 percent of our graduates get jobs related to their Oceanography degree or move straight into Masters or Ph.D. programs at some of the best graduate schools in the world. Employers appreciate that our graduates are well trained and able to tackle whatever challenges come their way. It's a great way to begin your career in the ocean sciences.

Oceanic research companies, science centers, environmental consultants, public and environmental health departments and government agencies are just a few of your many potential employers.
