    Volunteer for OLLI

OLLI at Cal Poly Humboldt is currently accepting applications for new volunteers and committee members. We are at an exciting period in our growth, and we need dedicated and innovative people to grow with us.

At OLLI, we believe learning should never end. OLLI at Humboldt creates opportunities for academic engagement, civic involvement, personal growth and fun. By offering a myriad of classes and experiences for a vibrant community of learners aged 50 and better, OLLI delivers learning for a lifetime.

OLLI offers educational opportunities to a wide demographic including all income levels, abilities and educational levels, many tribal affiliations and diverse ethnic backgrounds. It is important to us that our committees reflect and support the needs of the people we serve.

All volunteers should maintain a current OLLI membership and be a Friend of OLLI. We encourage all those with an interest in supporting lifelong learning to apply. We encourage all those with an interest in supporting lifelong learning to apply.

Some ways to volunteer

  • Serve on a committee or subcommittee. (see descriptions below)
  • Teach an OLLI course: Do you want to share your passion, develop innovative learning experiences and inspire others to learn without the burden of grades or homework? Get more information about proposing an OLLI course here.
  • Assist in the classroom: Work behind the scenes to help courses run smoothly, interact with faculty and students. Training is held three times per year. See the current calendar.
  • Use your skills: Do you like organizing social events, writing articles or blogs, taking photographs, or traveling? If there are other skills or connections that you have and would like to use to support OLLI please let us know.

Curriculum Committee

This committee is made up of 8-15 members.

Members should maintain a current OLLI membership and be a Friend of OLLI.

The primary goal of this committee is to assist the OLLI Director and Program Coordinator to ensure that OLLI maintains a vital and substantial program of high academic caliber covering diverse curriculum areas.

This committee works to:

  • Evaluate and assess current and past courses
  • Recruit, interview and evaluate prospective course instructors
  • Review course offerings and requests from members
  • Review of classroom policy and procedures
  • Develop and host Brown Bag Lunch Presentations
  • Act as classroom aids as needed

Time commitment: Meets approximately 8-12 times per year, additional sub-committee work/meetings may be required. Additional responsibilities may include: member recruitment, outreach through speaking engagements and community building. Attendance is encouraged at OLLI Open House events, Strategic Planning meetings and Leadership functions.

Finance & Fundraising Committee

This committee is made up of 5-9 members. Members should maintain a current OLLI membership and be a Friend of OLLI.

The primary goal of this committee is to assist the Dean, OLLI Director and Program Coordinator in the area of greatest need.

This committee works to:

  • Review the OLLI budget
  • Set fundraising goals
  • Plan annual fundraising campaigns
  • Develop scholarship and sponsorship opportunities
  • Serve as liaisons to the OLLI membership and the business community

Time commitment: Six to ten meetings per year, with some additional responsibilities, such as making fund appeals in classes, outreach through speaking engagements and community building. Attendance at OLLI Open House Events, Strategic Planning Meetings and Leadership Functions is encouraged.

Sub-Committees

The following groups are led by a member of the OLLI Curriculum Committee or Finance and Fundraising committee. Anyone from the OLLI membership can participate on any of these sub-committees.

  • Membership & Outreach. Provide advice and guidance regarding ways to grow, serve, and engage the OLLI membership. Attend events and outreach opportunities for promotion. Four meetings per year
  • Travel. Destination Humboldt. Lifelong Learning in the Redwoods Camp. Participate, research review and plan for OLLI Study Abroad program for summer 2023. Eight meetings per year
  • Hospitality. Coordinate refreshments for special events, including open house events and Brown Bag Events. Help locate potential facilities, event or classroom space for the program. Three or four meetings per year plus event and class refreshment coordination.
  • Volunteer Recruitment. Assess program needs, develop a recruitment strategy plan and training program. Four meetings per year plus orientation events.
