Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)

The Office of Research has been tasked with assuring that all use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for research purposes at Humboldt State University follows all federal regulations and HSU and CSU policies. Please see the HSU Policy on the use of UAS for research endeavors for more information.

As of July 12, 2017, the use of UAS related to research endeavors at HSU may be requested under FAA Part 107. Please see the description of Part 107 for further details.

For operation under Part 107, a Flight Operations Proposal must be submitted to the UAS Review Committee. Researchers may use the Flight Operations Proposal Template. Be sure to complete every section in the template.  Include a map of planned locales for flights in section (f).  If needed, here are the Directions for Using the SkyVector navigation aid. Email the completed proposal to sb64@humboldt.edu.

Two other documents will assist you in meeting the requirements for operating UAS through HSU: HSU Guidance on the Use of UAS and a Logic Flow Chart describing the procedures to use for approval of the use of UAS.

For those who have obtained an approved Flight Operations Plan from the HSU UAS Committee, there is a Pre-Flight UAS Checklist that lists the requirements that must be followed prior to operating the UAS.

Note that this policy does not apply to the commercial use of UAS. Please contact Risk Management for the procedures for commercial use of UAS.
