Copies will be available for purchase and signing. Sponsored by CRGS and English Departments, Celebration Latina, and the HSU Library.
Commencement Name Readers, Student/Faculty Marshalls, and Receptions
We need two name readers per department, two student marshals, two faculty marshals, and a list of where your receptions will be. All this information is in the Commencement Program, which goes to print at the end of March, so “by spring break” is the deadline to Richard.bruce@humboldt.edu.
Eric Freed Memorial Lecture Series—March 12
During the Spring 2014 semester the Religious Studies Department at Humboldt State University will memorialize Fr. Eric Freed with a series of three lectures. Each of these lectures will be devoted to a topic of importance to Fr. Freed.
The first of these lectures will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, 7pm, in the Native American Forum on the HSU campus. The topic will be “Balancing Faith with Scholarship.” It will highlight Fr. Freed’s conviction that religious faith is both challenged and enhanced by scholarship and critical inquiry. Speakers will discuss how the intersection between faith and critical thought affects religious life in community and Religious Studies in the University.
Speakers for this event include Katie Wilson (Lecturer in Religious Studies), Stephen Jenkins (Professor of Religious Studies), and Karen Harris (Lecturer in Religious Studies). The speakers will each address the audience with prepared remarks, and will then serve as a panel for open discussion with those in attendance.
The other two events in this series will be “Biblical Criticism and the Historical Jesus” (April 2, 2014), and “Religion and Social Action” (April 23, 2014). Participants and details for these lectures will be announced shortly. All events are to be held in the Native American Forum, beginning at 7pm.
Members of the public are cordially invited to attend. For information, please contact Sara Hart (sjh68@humboldt.edu) or William Herbrechtsmeier (wh1@humboldt.edu).

Walking in Two Worlds—April 10
Local Filmmaker Walks Between Two Worlds
Eureka CA - On Thursday, April 10, Local Filmmakers Night screening presents: “Walking in Two Worlds,” an evening featuring works of local filmmaker George Nelson. Nelson, influenced by both Native and American cultures, is the owner and operator of War Pony Films. His Native themed films focus on education and social change. The event will take place at the Eureka High School Lecture Hall (Humboldt and K Sts.).
George Nelson found his passion for filmmaking while attending Hoopa High School. His first documentary film was a short presentation on the 1955 flood that ravaged the Hoopa Valley. On this project, George piece together old 8mm footage that was shot by his grandfather during the flood, and new footage George had recorded on a VHS camcorder.
Nelson pursued a BA in film at Humboldt State University, utilizing his GI Bill and enjoyed working on film projects with many local filmmakers and he learned a lot from their experience and creativity. While at HSU, George produced the film noir clips that were used in the musical “The City of Angels.” These film clips won George an award for Cinematography from the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. In 2010 George also had an opportunity to work on a local commercial shoot for Leon’s Mufflers as the Director of Photography which won a Telly Award.
George currently works at the Hoopa Education Department as a Mentor and Adviser to Native students and continues to work of his films.
Following the screening, attendees can enjoy Q & A session with the filmmaker, movie trivia, prizes, and a reception at Access Humboldt's Community Media Center.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Screening starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person and all are welcome to attend.
Local Filmmakers Night, a collaboration between Access Humboldt, Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission and Eureka High School Media Club, is a screening series that supports and promotes the local film community.
