Registration Holds for Students

There is a registration hold in place for all students with 90 units or more who have not yet filed an application for graduation.  While these students have received emails informing them of this hold, not all of them read their email.  It would be a good idea for you to make a brief announcement in your classes.  To have the hold lifted, they need to apply for graduation and they can download the form, or apply online by going here: http://pine.humboldt.edu/registrar/forms/  and clicking on Bachelor’s Degree Application for Graduation to download the form, or click submit online.

Sustainable Futures Speaker Series—Wed, Nov 20 at 5:30

“Sustaining Rural Places: What are we Sustaining?” will be presented by Dr Erin Kelly in the Native American Forum.

Erin Kelly joined the Humboldt State University Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources in fall 2012 as an assistant professor in forest policy, economics, and administration. She is interested in forest ownership and governance and rural community well-being. Recently, she has been exploring the impacts of policies like the California carbon market on forest practices. Her graduate work at Oregon State University included research on industrial forest restructuring, small-scale forest management, and emerging land tenures. Her post-doctoral work was in Western Newfoundland and focused on the changing forest industry in the province.

The Sustainable Futures Speaker Series is presented by the Environment & Community Graduate Program and the Schatz Energy Research Center.

Learning Management Systems (LMS) Review Status & Canvas Pilot

Campus is reviewing its LMS (Moodle) to see is HSU will continue with Moodle or adopt another software, such as Canvas. The Office of eLearning and Extended Education is performing a review and needs feedback from Moodle users and a group of faculty to test Canvas. Department chairs have received more information, so contact them or Alex Hwu or Geoff Cain of eLearning and Extended Education.

International Education Week & Geology Colloquium: Takata High Schools Boat—Wednesday, November 20 in KBR at 2pm.

On April 7, 2013, a 20-foot fishing boat beached near Crescent City. Professor Lori Dengler, with the help of Kumi Watanabe-Schock and Facebook, was able to connect the boat to a high school in Northern Japan that was devastated by the March 11, 2011 tsunami. Del Norte High School students cleaned the boat and helped in the return of the boat to Japan. This talk chronicles the tsunami connections between Northern California and Japan and the story of the little boat that is a symbol of hope to a city still devastated by the March 2011 tsunami.
