Talk description: Climate change is promoting wildfire throughout western states, making the impacts of fire on California's streams a critical area of study.  To investigate post-fire recovery of headwater ecosystems, I analyzed biotic and abiotic characteristics from Klamath Mountain streams that experienced riparian wildfire six-to-eight years previous.  Comparisons of canopy cover, algal biomass, and macroinvertebrate communities among fire severity categories suggest that these fire-adapted ecosystems maintain resiliency to wildfire, and may benefit from alternative states induced by such disturbances.
