Loss Of HSU Student John Vayo

July 7, 2017

Dear University Community:

We are saddened to share news of the loss of Humboldt State student, John Vayo. We extend our condolences to his family and friends.

John, 38, a native of Virginia, died on July 2. Entering his last year of the undergraduate social work program this fall, he is remembered as a kind and compassionate student. Department of Social Work Chair Ronnie Swartz recalls that John was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back.

John was also deeply committed to the values and practices of harm reduction, a multifaceted, community-oriented approach to addressing the harm associated with drug use. His passion showed in his volunteer work with the Humboldt Area Center for Harm Reduction.

As witty as he was caring, John made those who knew him laugh. He also loved the outdoors, setting aside time to enjoy nature despite his busy schedule.

John, who touched many lives, had the potential to shape the human service community. His death is a loss for the Humboldt State community and we are thinking of him and those who are close to him.

Any students in need of additional support during this time are urged to consider contacting the Dean of Students office at 707.826.3504 or stopping by Siemens Hall 211. Staff or faculty seeking additional support may utilize the Employee Assistance Program at 707.443.7358.
