Mathematics Colloquium
Final Fall Semester Presentation
Thursday, December 10, 2015  4 p.m. BSS 166
“Can Dolphins Communicate Abstract Ideas?”
Dr. Abeer Hasan,
HSU Mathematics Department

Evidence speaks louder than wishful thinking and statistics quantifies the strength of the evidence. In this talk, you will see statistics in action. Statistical inference is a powerful tool that can be used to discriminate between random chance and real phenomena.  We will discuss a famous experiment that was conducted to study animal behavior. Using nothing but logic and simple arithmetic, we will illustrate the basic idea of statistical inference and quantify the evidence in favor of the research hypothesis.  We will assume that the attendees have knowledge of elementary algebra only. No statistical background is required.

Don't forget coffee, tea and goodies at the Pre-Colloquium Tea at 3:30 in the 3rd Floor Open Area in the BSS building.
